    Display Gardener and Assistant Farmer

    The Herbfarm began as an actual herb farm. We are now a restaurant that serves 9-course, chef-selected menus focused on local and seasonal ingredients. We have a 5-acre farm that produces for the Chef and edible display gardens where guests tour just before dinner. These gardens are also the back drop for many weddings and corporate events.

    Take lead, under Head of Farm & Garden, in design of food related plantings of raised beds and surrounding public display gardens at The Herbfarm Restaurant site so gardens are presentable for guest viewing, weddings and tours at all times with representative planting of herbs & vegetables in current menu theme. Coordinate with Willows Lodge's Dept of Natural Beauty. Combine Creativity, Whimsy, and Function.

    Kitchen Gardener will also take a leadership role as assistant farmer in all aspects of 5-acre production farm. Tasks include seeding, shopping, watering, feeding, animal care, organizing, seasonal staff and volunteer supervision, weeding, harvesting, pruning, installation, composting etc

    • Tidiness and safety with tools & hoses in a public garden setting
    • Daily interaction with cooks and guests
    • The gardener will support the leadership at our 5 acre production farm operation
    • Work on own and as leader of a team at farm and garden
    • Daily care of livestock (feed, water, egg collection). Beekeeping a plus
    • Care and training of pet pigs
    • Care of indoor plants in 2 suites and inside the restaurant itself
    • Track activities and expenses in MS Word, Excel
    • Use MS Outlook for daily email communications


    Supervise/Manage volunteers and seasonal farm/garden staff on Head of Farm & Garden's days off.

    Experience and Qualifications

    • 2+ years experience in commercial/public gardening preferably in the Pacific Northwest with vegetables, herbs & edible flowers and cottage garden perennials
    • Bed and landscape design experience
    • Understanding of IPM, biological soil and plant management and production gardening helpful
    • Some knowledge but also willingness to learn about new plants and methods
    • Working knowledge of MS Excel, Outlook, Word

    Skills needed

    • Strong knowledge of edible plants
    • Strength--able to lift 30# repeatedly in the course of a day
    • Physically capable--wheelbarrows, shoveling, hauling, bending, weeding, composting

    Work year 'round. Full thyme Mid-April through October. Part thyme November-March. Average 30 hours a week though the year.
